About Chess
Chess is the world's most famous strategy board game, and you can play it free in your browser. You play White against a computer opponent, or switch to Black, and every standard rule is included: castling, en passant, promotion and check. Tap a piece to see its legal moves, capture material and checkmate the enemy king.
Chess is the classic two-colour strategy game: move your pieces, capture the opponent's and trap their king. This version has the full rules, including castling, en passant and pawn promotion, played against a computer opponent on a red and black board.
Your score is the value of the opponent's pieces you capture, plus 20 bonus points for a win or 5 for a draw. It loads instantly in your browser and works on phones and computers.
How to play Chess
- Tap one of your pieces, then tap a highlighted square to move it. Dots show moves, rings show captures.
- Capture the opponent's pieces and protect your own; a king in check must escape on the next move.
- Use Undo to take back your last move, or switch sides with the button below the board.
- Checkmate the opponent's king to win. Stalemate is a draw.
